The edition of the 2017 Black Friday and its equivalent on-line Cyber Monday are round the corner and surely many companies are already getting everything ready to celebrate these incredible days of huge sales with great offers and promotions.

But, what do you know about Black Friday and Cyber Monday?
Well, this term began in the US back in the 1950’s. It is always the day after one of the most traditional US celebrations, Thanksgiving Day, which is always celebrated the last Thursday of November
So, the day following this celebration symbolizes the beginning of the Christmas Shopping Campaign, which is always linked to great offers and deals.
The origin of the term Black Friday, however, is not quite clear. Some sources state that this date represents the day of the year when retailers begin to turn a profit, thus going from having red numbers to have them in black.
So retailers would cut off prices to make shoppers go to their shops. But then, by Monday sales would drop down again.

And this is when the term Cyber Monday was born. As the era of Internet entered into our lives, retailers noticed that after the Black Friday, consumers would keep on shopping online while they were at work so, why not take advantage of this? Cyber Monday term was officially born on 2005, when Ellen Davis, senior vice president of the National Retail Federation in the US, issued a press release with the title, “Cyber Monday Quickly Becoming One of the Biggest Online Shopping Days of the Year”.

  • Go Mobile: 2016 figures showed a 50% year-on-year growth in mobile payments. Make sure your web is responsive!
  • Get those offers out!: Use all your channels to target your audience. Shoppers engage better in a multi-channel process before purchasing.
  • Analyse: Once the campaign is over, analyse and report, so you can learn from your mistakes and make the most of the next Black Friday season!

Chinese Travel Trends: Towards direct bookings

For many Western countries when Chinese Travel topic is addressed the picture they get is of huge travel groups, where all is pre-scheduled, pre-booked and obviously organized through a Tour Operator or a Travel Agency.

But things are changing.

Recent reports released by the China Tourism Academy and Ctrip.com travel agency have concluded that individualized and customized trips are an increasing trend among Chinese travelers.

This week Travel World China posted that according to Dai Bin, Director of the China Tourism Academy, “More people prefer independent trips, instead of traveling with groups, and those who spend a lot of money shopping account for a smaller portion of Chinese tourists.”

This trend shoots out when referring to Chinese Millennials as Nikkei Asian Review recently published: “Chinese millennial travelers are increasingly inclined to prefer a solo trip rather than package tours. Millennials, who can communicate in English and are skilled in using digital devices such as smartphones, can make their own travel plans by using various information online”.

So, what’s for sure is that Chinese travel market has great potential right now.

In the first 6 months of 2017, the ranking of most popular destinations for Chinese tourists is headed by Thailand, followed by Japan and Singapore
